Access to quality eye care is becoming increasingly difficult. The German start-up Mirantus offers an innovative solution by integrating eye care into existing optical retail chains. Through smart digital technology and local screenings, they bring specialist care closer to where people live.
Why
Over 100 million Europeans live in areas with limited access to healthcare. In Germany, the shortage of ophthalmologists is growing rapidly, leading to waiting times of up to a year. As the population ages and demand increases, the problem is only expected to worsen. Meanwhile, late detection of eye diseases often results in irreversible vision loss and a significant decline in quality of life. Early diagnosis is therefore crucial.
What
Mirantus enables eye screenings in regular optical stores, performed by trained opticians and optometrists. The collected data is sent through a digital platform to ophthalmologists, who assess it remotely. If necessary, a video consultation follows. This approach uses existing infrastructure, requires no major investments from optical partners, and makes specialist care more accessible for patients.
Impact
Since its launch in 2022, Mirantus has helped over 5,000 patients, with platform usage growing nearly 70% in the first quarter of 2024. More than 100 distributors and over 1,000 ophthalmologists are already connected. A national rollout is underway in Germany through a partnership with Sanoptis AG, and expansion across Europe is on the horizon. Mirantus offers a scalable, future-proof solution to an urgent healthcare challenge.
